# Abstract email and IP checks in Default

> How Default uses Abstract Email Reputation to check email quality and risk, and Abstract Geolocation to look up location and network details for an IP address: where each runs, fields, credits, and setup.

Default integrates with Abstract through 2 providers. **Abstract Email Reputation** checks whether an
email address is deliverable and risky, and **Abstract Geolocation** looks up where an IP address is
and what network it belongs to. Default manages access to both and bills each check in credits, so
you don't need an Abstract account or API key.

## Abstract in Default at a glance

| | Abstract Email Reputation | Abstract Geolocation |
| - | - | - |
| What it does in Default | Checks deliverability, quality, and risk for an email address you already have. | Looks up location, time zone, network, and VPN use for an IP address. |
| Integrations category | **Enrichment** | **Enrichment** |
| Where it shows up | The **Email validation** check in a [waterfall](/settings/configurations/waterfalls) (the default choice), the **Enrich Data** workflow node, the Chrome extension's **Request enrichment**, and [Tables](/tables) (available where enabled). | The **IP validation** check in a waterfall, and the legacy **Abstract Geolocation** workflow node. |
| What it needs | An email address. | A public IP address, from a form submission or a website intent trigger. |
| Who supplies the data | Default. No Abstract account needed. | Default. No Abstract account needed. |
| Credits | 2 credits per email checked, deliverable or not. | 2 credits per IP address checked. |

## Abstract Email Reputation in Default

* Waterfall email validation: In a waterfall's **Validation** section, turn on
  **Email validation**. **Abstract Email Reputation** is the default provider, and **Icypeas** is
  the other choice. The check runs on the person's email when the waterfall runs in an
  **Enrich Data** node, and during form pre-enrichment when it is your primary waterfall. It is
  skipped when there is no email. See [Waterfalls](/settings/configurations/waterfalls).
* **Enrich Data** node: Pick **Abstract Email Reputation** under **Providers** in the node's
  **Enrichment source** field, with **Enrichment target** set to **Person**. See
  [Enrichment nodes](/workflows/steps-enrichment).
* Chrome extension and Tables: Abstract Email Reputation is also in the provider list under
  **Request enrichment** in the [Chrome extension](/chrome-extension), and in Tables where Tables is
  enabled.

Abstract Email Reputation checks addresses you already have and does not find new ones.

## Fields Abstract Email Reputation returns

| Group | Fields |
| - | - |
| Deliverability | Deliverability status and detail, and whether the format, SMTP check, and MX records are valid. The MX records themselves. |
| Quality | A quality score, and whether the address is a free email, disposable, a catch-all, a subaddress, a role address, or has a suspicious username. Whether the domain enforces DMARC and has a strict SPF record. |
| Sender | The first and last name, email provider, and organization name and type behind the address. |
| Domain | The domain, its age, registrar, registration and expiry dates, whether it has a live website, and whether it uses a risky top-level domain. |
| Risk | The address risk status and the domain risk status. |
| Breaches | The number of known data breaches, and the dates of the first and last one. |

For example, branch after the **Enrich Data** node so disposable or risky addresses do not reach a
sequence.

## Abstract Geolocation in Default

* Waterfall IP validation: In a waterfall's **Validation** section, turn on **IP validation**.
  The check always uses Abstract Geolocation. In an **Enrich Data** node, the check uses the IP
  address from a **Form Submission** trigger or a **Website Intent Signal** trigger. During form
  pre-enrichment with your primary waterfall, it uses the visitor's IP address. It is skipped when
  there is no public IP address. See [Waterfalls](/settings/configurations/waterfalls).
* **Abstract Geolocation** node (legacy): Existing workflows that use this node keep working. It no
  longer appears in the **Add Node** picker. See
  [Enrichment nodes](/workflows/steps-enrichment#abstract-geolocation-legacy).

## Fields Abstract Geolocation returns

| Group | Fields |
| - | - |
| Location | IP address, city, region and region code, postal code, country and country code, whether the country is in the EU, continent and continent code, latitude, and longitude. |
| Time zone | Time zone name and abbreviation, GMT offset, current local time, and whether daylight saving time is in effect. |
| Network | Whether the IP is a VPN, the internet service provider, the organization name, the connection type, and the autonomous system number (ASN). |
| Currency | The local currency name and code. |

Location from Abstract Geolocation describes where the visitor is, which can differ from where their
company is based. It suits time zone checks and regional routing of new leads. For territories and
account ownership, use company data such as the headquarters country.

## Turn on Abstract

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Integrations">
    Select **Settings** in the sidebar, then **Integrations** under **Workspace Settings**. Admin
    access is required.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the Abstract provider">
    Select **Abstract Email Reputation** or **Abstract Geolocation** in the **Enrichment** category.
    Each has its own card and its own switch.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Turn it on">
    Turn on the switch next to the name. If the switch is unavailable, contact Default to turn the
    provider on for your workspace.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Put it to work">
    Turn on **Email validation** or **IP validation** in a
    [waterfall](/settings/configurations/waterfalls), or pick Abstract Email Reputation in an
    **Enrich Data** node.

    The check now runs in the places you added it.
  </Step>
